OUA announces the cancellation of all winter term sports programming

On Oct. 15, Ontario University Athletics announced the cancellation of all OUA-sanctioned sports programming and championships until March 31, 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has now halted the entirety of the 2020-21 university sports season, following the June announcement that sport programming would be cancelled until Dec. 31.

“We recognize how disappointing this is to many, especially our student-athletes, but these are unprecedented times. We are committed to delivering OUA sport once it is safe to do so,” Deborah MacLatchy, chair of the OUA Board of directors said in a statement.

OUA has stated that school teams will continue to have the autonomy to implement Return to Train protocols on campus, in accordance with provincial health regulations.

Laurier athletics and recreation will continue to provide in-person training opportunities to varsity teams that have been cleared to train on campus as part of the department’s phased reopening of its facilities.

Effective Jan. 1, 2021, school teams will also be allowed to determine their involvement in any exhibition games or member-driven competitions, according to the OUA’s COVID-19 FAQ page

Laurier athletics will explore the possibility of their involvement in these exhibition games, in consultation with the school as well as the Region of Waterloo Public Health.

USPORTS has also confirmed the cancellation of all national championships for the second term.
