The nightlife scene in Kitchener-Waterloo is carrying on into the summer months, even as the school year comes to an end and many students leave the city.
Throughout the fall and winter semesters, King street is typically packed with students heading out for a drink. Popular spots such as Philโs Grandsonโs Place, Rare and Pub on King are some key destinations for those looking to socialize.
โDuring the school year, the nightlife scene is fuelled by a huge student population, with three major universities in the area bringing a lot of energy and people out every week,โ Giovanni Spagnolo, an associate at Rare said.ย
Spagnolo said the summer months are usually quieter, but businesses adapt by shifting their focus to events, or select promoters. โSummers are usually a little quieter as many students head home, but we focus on putting on more events,โ he said. โThe goal is to bring out the local crowd while still catering to students who stay in the city.โ
Mike Lesage, assistant manager and bartender at Philโs Grandsonโs Place, agreed that there is a noticeable difference between seasons.
โNightlife in Waterloo is definitely more lively and chaotic during the fall and winter semesters,โ Lesage said.ย
Despite the seasonal drag, Lesage said the presence of the surrounding universities continues to benefit businesses year-round.
โHaving the universities is definitely a huge help to our business and really all the bars in the area,โ he said. โItโs helpful having thousands of young people who want to congregate and socialize all in one area,โ Lesage said.ย
Spagnolo added that despite the clientele being primarily students, the crowd is very diverse.
To maintain business through the summer months, venues rely on programming and major events to attract customers. Lesage pointed to large crowds gathering for sporting events, including Toronto Blue Jays playoff games and the Stanley Cup playoffs.
He added that international events such as FIFA tournaments are expected to draw steady attendance throughout the summer, โRight now we have the FIFA World Cup games going on and will probably have that on for the rest of the spring and summer.โ
Beyond sports, bars and clubs are hosting themed nights, live music and DJ events to attract both students staying in Waterloo and local residents. Outdoor patios, such as those at The Kentucky Bourbon and Barbecue, paired with the warmer weather, offer a more seasonal atmosphere.
For students looking for an authentic club experience during the summer, Spagnolo said Rare aims to fill the desire for a city style of clubbing.
โWe felt that there was a gap in the market for a true nightclub experience,โ he said. โGuests can expect a mix of hip hop, afrobeats, dancehall, house, throwbacks and popular hits. We keep the music open to appeal to a wide range of people.โ
Philโs Grandsonโs Place continues to serve as a staple for many Laurier students, being the closest club to campus. The venue has built a reputation as a go-to spot for first-year students experiencing nightlife for the first time.
โNights at Philโs are kind of a one-size-fits-all club experience,โ Lesage said. โWe have a dance floor and a dedicated DJ every night. We are open for those who want to dance and enjoy the music. We also have seating areas and tables for those who want to take a break or sit with friends.โ
With a mix of students, local residents and seasonal events, the scene remains active, proving that the party does not end when the classes do.
