WLU women’s basketball edged by Windsor

After a dominating win over Guelph on Wednesday, it appeared as though the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team was pulling out of their late season slump. However, on Saturday afternoon, they ran into the 19-1 Windsor Lancers, and any hope of a winning streak was lost, as the Hawks fell 65-62.

The Hawks were donning their pink uniforms as part of the league-wide breast cancer awareness initiative. Funds generated by ticket sales as well as a few raffles were donated to breast cancer research.

Despite the loss, the Hawks had already clinched the final playoff spot in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) west division, with the win over Guelph. The Lancers had also sealed their playoff fate, clinching the OUA west’s top spot earlier in the weeks.

Who the purple and gold will face in the quarter-finals is still a mystery. Being the last seed, the Hawks will play the highest ranked team, however, the top two regular season seeds -Windsor and Western- will both receive first-round byes, meaning Laurier will play whoever finishes third in the OUA west, and that position is currently held by three teams -Brock, Lakehead and McMaster- who all have identical 12-8 records.

The Hawks will close out their regular season with a home game vs the Brock Badgers on Wednesday and a road game vs the Waterloo Warriors next Sunday, before heading into the post-season.
