The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) confirmed at a news briefing Sunday that the torso of an unidentified Caucasian female was discovered in Kitchener on Saturday and that a homicide investigation is underway. The torso was discovered, wearing a t-shirt that read “Forget princess, I want to be a vampire”at approximately 11:05 a.m. Saturday morning in a dumpster behind an apartment building located at 250 Frederick Street in Kitchener.

The human remains were removed from the site and have been taken to Hamilton to undergo forensic autopsy.

“At this point what we have was some citizens passing through, happened to notice in this garbage can what they felt were potentially human remains, and overnight that was confirmed by the coroner,” explained Kevin Thaler, WRPS inspector and executive officer of media and public affairs. He could not verify whether there was any connection between the body and the apartment building, or whether the people who discovered the torso were residents of the building.

This is the first homicide of 2013 in this jurisdiction.

Thaler confirmed that a search of the area and door-to-door canvassing had occurred. Police are appealing to the public for any information about the identity of the victim or knowledge of any suspicious activity in the Frederick and Gordon Street area.

“Any death, any homicide in the community is a tragedy. There’s a family involved in this. The focus right now is on identifying who that person is and finding out who did this,” said Thaler.

Anyone with information can contact the Homicide Branch of the police at 519-650-8500 ext. 8666 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
