The Laurier women’s and men’s soccer teams hosted the Western Mustangs in their final game at home. The women’s team celebrated ten senior athletes who prepared to play one last time at Alumni Field.

The Laurier Golden Hawks battled in a physical match against the Mustangs, led by their fifth year Captain, Lila Nakano. Nakano shed light on her Senior Day experience, saying, “Although this was my last game on Alumni Field, my focus was on the game. The atmosphere in the change room was energetic, we knew this was a big game.”

In the first half, neither team successfully capitalized on their scoring opportunities. Laurier remained focussed on defending  as Western out-shot them and was able to penetrate their back line.

Going into the second half at 0-0, the Golden Hawks were able to create more chances, having an equal amount of shots as the Mustangs. In the 68th minute, however, Western successfully found the back of the net and secured a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks gave a hard fought battle, but were unable to finish their chances, as the final score was 1-0 for the Mustangs.

Nakano’s journey as the  Captain of the Golden Hawks soccer team exemplified the dedication and passion she brought to the sport. Her fifth and final season this fall not only symbolized her commitment, but also showcased her leadership on and off the field.

Nakano expressed her gratitude toward her Laurier soccer experience, “It demanded resiliency, hard work and pushing myself to never give up.”

Beyond the competition on the field, Nakano’s time with the Golden Hawks was a fulfilling experience. She fondly reflected about the bonds she formed with her teammates, describing them as “the most amazing girls.” These connections go beyond the soccer pitch, highlighting the sense of camaraderie and sisterhood that often forms in Golden Hawks sports.

Congratulations to seniors Tatiana Boutros, Claire Di Benedetto, Mackenzie Forte, Lexi Kroeker, Nicole Lovisotto, Sophia Messina, Brynn Morgan, Lila Nakano, Charlie Ridge and Sabeen Sakran.
