Women’s soccer clinches spot at nationals

KINGSTON, Ont. — After a one-year hiatus, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s soccer team will be making their return to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship.

On Saturday afternoon, the Hawks downed the Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-1 in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) semi-final, lifting them to Sunday’s provincial championship game, and guaranteeing them a spot at nationals.

After winning the OUA championship and taking the consolation title at nationals in 2008, last season saw the Hawks take a step back. They lost in the OUA semi-final, leaving them just shy of the CIS finals after losing just one game in the regular season.

This year, the Hawks only lost once in the regular season yet again, however they lived up to expectations in the OUA semis and will look to claim their sixth provincial title in team history Sunday at 1:30 p.m. versus the host Queen’s Gaels.
