With the beginning of October comes a whole new line of fashionwear. The Fall season is a very important time for the fashion industry, with stores full of coats, boats, and sweaters.
For years, the Autumn season has inspired many fashion trends seen around Canada. Incorporating many aesthetics which are primarily defined by their cozy, layered styles with a warm, earthy colour palette, made up of materials like flannel, wool, and tweed.
When styling an outfit, it is important to start with the colours. Typically, fall fashion is made up of darker, warmer tones, such as mustard yellow, rust red, dusky orange, olive green, and of course, a variety of deep, rich browns. These colours are classic, providing a chic, grounded base for an outfit and reflecting the earthy, colourful change of the season.
“You can wear whatever colour you want. I am currently in an era where I love wearing vibrant colours from a 12-pack Crayola pencil colour set,” said Bachir Miloudi, founder of the Bachir Magazine and former Head of Photo and Film for the Laurier Fashion Society. “If I had to pick a colour for the season, I’d choose a dark, royal emerald green. Think of the colour palette for the Rolex brand. A brown majority outfit with an accent of the green is such a chic concept.”
There are many different fashionable patterns that come to light during the change of the season. The most quintessential pattern is of course, plaid, a pattern with a lot of rustic charm and versality. The houndstooth pattern is another seasonal staple. Found mostly on tailored skirts and garments made for cold weather, houndstooth is made from wool and is known for its timeless sophistication.
After the patterns and colours have been decided, it is time to layer. When layering clothes effectively, the key to success starts with balance. Start with a base layer, something light and flexible, this will serve as a foundation to the finished look.
From this point, progressively add thicker layers overtop of the base. With the weather getting cooler, coats, jackets, and other insulating layers are a must. Using these items as outwear is a definite way to boost an outfit, especially when layered over thin, fitting clothing like pencil skirts, polos, stockings, or jeans. These items paired with thicker cardigans, trench coats, vests, or jean jackets create a unique, balanced silhouette.
When asked about his own fashion tips, Miloudi said, “Always consider the actual material of the outfit. The different qualities and different textures of the pieces impact outfits so much, in depth and motion.”
Now, when the outfit is complete, the fun of accessorizing can begin. Fall is a fantastic month for maximalist enjoyers, bringing a whole new selection of hats, scarves, and gloves, tights and belts are also of course, a must. For a more elegant style, consider, pearls, pedants, and chunky bracelets. In terms of jewellery, both silver and gold can be worn during fall. Gold is especially complimentary of warmer skin tones, elevating the warm hues of fall with a natural glow, while silver provides a cool, modern contrast, enhances the natural luminosity of cool-toned complexions with an air of sophistication.
“Live your life like it’s a cartoon and you’re the main character who dresses differently every day. This is easier said than done, but once you get into a mindset of, “This is my movie and my eyes are my camera” and you leave the fear of judgment from expressing yourself fully in clothes, you find your confidence.” Says Miloudi.
