Shopify Plus expands to Uptown Waterloo

Shopify plans to open aย secondย office in Waterlooย and hire 300ย toย 500 new employees during theirย expansion.

The organization currentlyย has two commerce platformsย โ€”ย Shopify,ย which accommodates entrepreneurs and small businessesย andย Shopifyย Plusย โ€”ย whichย is forย enterprises,ย high-volumeย merchantsย and larger businesses.

Shopify is a Canadian company looking to expand further intoย the Waterloo tech sectorย withย hopes that theirย secondย building will prompt additional growth. Theย secondย building will be located on 85 Willis Way,ย steps away from their current building at 57 Erb Street.

โ€œThis location has been focusing widely on Shopify Plus which is the work we do with high volume andย higher growth merchants, and so were helping these larger merchants to expand and grow their business using our platform,โ€ย Tammyย Connelly, talent acquisition lead at Shopify, said.

Shopifyย is planning to add 300ย toย 500ย newย jobs over the nextย twoย toย threeย years in over to accommodate the office expansion.

โ€œWeย came into the market in late 2014,ย opening our first very small office at theย Tannery,ย and have subsequently expended our footprint over the last two years,โ€ย Connelly said.

The positions which are available for hireย includeย a wide range of opportunities from finance to marketing. The three main teams which they are hiring for vary,ย explained Connelly.

Shopify has hired a number of Wilfrid Laurier University graduates and interns for the Waterloo office.ย As a companyย they areย excited to reach out to the Laurier community and encourage people to apply for the various opportunities.

โ€œThe roles that we hire for here in Waterlooย [span]ย across three main areas: one is our revenue team so sales, marketing, business operations, solutions and partnerships and those teams, the next grouping is services account managers [and]ย launch managers, so we call them merchant success,โ€ย Connelly said.

โ€œThe third group is our product group, which are engineers and product engineers, developers, andย UXย which are user experience like designers, researchers, content strategist and front-end developers, and product managers,โ€ย Connelly said.

Due to the fact that Shopify is looking fill an entire building while focusing on the expansion of Shopifyย Plus, many employees will be hired from all areas of expertise. When it comes to who is being hired, the vast number of opportunities available allowsย forย a wide range of experience.

โ€œWeโ€™re hiring the full range; new grads students and interns are a huge part ofย our long-term investment in people.ย We hire a number of interns across Shopify Inc. but specifically here inย Waterlooย we are also hiringย [everyone from]ย new grads right up to very experienced folks,โ€ย Connelly said.

โ€œWe need all types of backgrounds and experience inย order to have a diverse and inclusive team.ย Weโ€™re solving very interesting problems for our merchantsย [so]ย we like to have every type of background and experience at the table,โ€ย Connelly said.

Connelly explainedย that attending various networking and community events is a great opportunity to get to know the company.
