Former Hawk heads to Olympics

This February, former Golden Hawks’ curler John Morris will join the likes of Laurier alumni Cindy Eadie and Cheryl Pounder — who were Olympians in softball and hockey respectively — and represent the purple and gold on the international stage at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

Morris will be competing as part of three-time Olympian Kevin Martin’s rink, who earned the right to represent Canada after winning the finals of the qualification tournament on Sunday in Calgary.

A native of Gloucester, Ontario, Morris was a member of Laurier’s men’s curling team from 1998-2001, earning Laurier Athlete of the Week honours the week of Jan. 29, 2001. Since leaving WLU, Morris has worked as a firefighter in Calgary, on top of continuing competitive curling.
