As a starting pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, baseball occupies a major part of Cease’s life. On a Major League mound, he is a pitcher competing against hitters. But on Aug. 25, 2026 Cease stepped away from his identity as a baseball player and met fans as Dylan Cease the artist, showcasing his own paintings at a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Despite the event taking place on a weekday morning, many fans came out to see Cease’s artwork in person and take photos with him.
“I think it really just, I don’t know, makes me happy, helps me feel good about life, helps me kind of have something that’s, I guess, opposite from baseball in the sense of baseball is sort of more war-like, you know, and painting’s more forgiving in the sense of I can just go put whatever I want on there and it doesn’t have to be, you know, I’m not having to be perfect. I’m just having fun and enjoying it. So I think it helps me balance my life and balance myself in a lot of ways. And ultimately I just really enjoy doing it.” Cease said in an interview with TSN
Cease explained that baseball and art play very different roles in his life. Unlike the Major League mound, painting allows him to step away from the pressure and freely express whatever he wants without worrying about the outcome. For Cease, painting has become an important part of his life, providing a sense of balance away from the constant competition and intensity of baseball.
After joining the Toronto Blue Jays on a seven-year, $210 million contract on November 22, 2025, Cease has continued to share his artwork with fans throughout the season, occasionally posting his paintings on social media. One of his pieces even drew significant attention when it sold for approximately C$16,000 at a Toronto Blue Jays auction. While Cease had primarily shared his artwork with fans through social media, this exhibition gave him a first opportunity to showcase his paintings to the public in person.
Reflecting on the experience of having people see and respond to his work, Cease said, “And ultimately I just really enjoy doing it. I kind of just like that people are seeing it and, you know, I like seeing opinions on it. Like you don’t have to like it. I like, you know, I like people. Some people love it, some people hate it. It’s interesting just seeing the mixed receptions. But ultimately, I mean, a lot of people have liked it, which is great.”
On the mound, Dylan Cease is a Major League pitcher who competes against hitters in pursuit of victory. But in front of a canvas, he is simply someone who enjoys painting and the process of creating art. This exhibition gave fans a special opportunity to see a different side of Cease, not just the baseball player they know, but a person with a genuine love for art.
