Terry Fox Run returns to Waterloo Park

The 48th annual Terry Fox Run returned to Waterloo Park on Sunday, Sept. 20, bringing community members together to continue Terry Foxโ€™s legacy while raising funds for cancer research.

Organized by Derek Hergaudt and Terry Hergaudt, the Waterloo run raised approximately $86,000 this year. Since the local event began in 1981 at Bechtel Park, it has contributed more than $1.1 million toward cancer research efforts.

Local businesses and organizations also played a role in supporting the event. Sponsors included Orangetheory Fitness and Club Pilates, which provided hydration drinks and post-run stretching opportunities for participants. Local food supplier Pfennings Organic was also on site, providing lunch for runners following the event.

Dorothy McCabe, the mayor of Waterloo, and Councillor Freeman were among those in attendance and participated in the run.

The event officially began at 10 a.m., with participants making their way through the parkโ€™s pathways. Reflecting the spirit of Terry Foxโ€™s original cross-country journey, runners, walkers and community members of all ages and abilities were encouraged to participate at their own pace.

The annual run continues the legacy of Foxโ€™s 1980 Marathon of Hope, during which he set out to run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Although his journey was ultimately cut short, communities across the country have continued to honour his efforts through annual fundraising events for more than four decades.

Beyond the fundraising total, the Waterloo event served as an opportunity for residents to come together in support of a cause that has touched countless families.

This yearโ€™s $86,000 contribution adds another chapter to that ongoing effort, as the Waterloo community continues to carry forward the message and mission behind Foxโ€™s Marathon of Hope.
