Terrace changes opening hours

The Terrace food court, located in the Fred Nichols Campus Center, has adjusted its hours of operation this year, opening earlier in the morning to serve breakfast and only staying open late on Saturday night.

โ€œWe have extended โ€ฆ our morning hours and we are serving more breakfast food in the morning,โ€ said Wilfrid Laurier University Studentsโ€™ Union general manager Mike McMahon.

The newly opened Williams Cafรฉ as well as Union Market now open at 8 a.m. on weekdays and at 9 a.m. on weekends, serving a range of fresh breakfast foods for students.

While the Terrace is now open early in the morning, it does not remain open past 11 p.m. on any night other than Saturdays.

All vendors at the Terrace will be open until 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 9 p.m. on Sunday, while only Pizza Pizza and Pita Shack will remain open until 3 a.m. on Saturday.

Although the Terrace has remained open late in previous years on several nights, such as Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, both the changes in the nights the Turret is open and expanded hours of food service at Wilfโ€™s have reduced the need for service in the Terrace on these nights.

โ€œIn the evenings weโ€™re not open late on Friday night and that started towards the end of last year because the Turret is not open on Friday nights anymore,โ€ said studentsโ€™ union president Laura Sheridan.

โ€œIf you look back at the trends of the Terrace hours over the past five years or so it basically reflects โ€ฆ whatโ€™s going on with the Turret.โ€

According to Sheridan, because there are no longer Turret nights on Fridays, as there were in the past, the demand for late night food on campus has been greatly reduced.

Sheridan also noted that sales have shown that most of the Terraceโ€™s late night business comes from students leaving the Turret and so to extend the food courtโ€™s hours on a night that the Turret is not open would result in a loss, and therefore would not be worth the number of students who required the service.

In addition to the reduced bar nights at the Turret, Wilfโ€™s restaurant has eliminated its reduced evening menu and the kitchen will now remain open as long as there are customers, minimizing the need for Terrace service on Wilfโ€™s nights, such as Tuesday.

โ€œIt would almost be redundant to have the food court downstairs because our kitchen is going to be remaining open in Wilfโ€™s this year,โ€ said Sheridan.

While late night food from the Terrace is not as popular on nights that the Turret is not open, there are still students on campus at night, and late night food service is no longer available to them.

โ€œItโ€™s kind of annoying, I donโ€™t make food often so thatโ€™s one of my main sources of food,โ€ said first-year student Joshua Lerner. โ€œThat would be sick if I could get a late night snack โ€ฆ it would be better.โ€

โ€œIts open later than the dining hall so I guess you just have to appreciate it for that,โ€ added Laurier student Shannon Moore.
