Catherine Fife was elected to the legislature Thursday night, taking over the seat vacated by PC Elizabeth Witmer in late April. Fife was declared the winner just after 10 p.m.

“Today families in Kitchener-Waterloo have handed me a big responsibility. Over 9 years I’ve learned about the kind of leadership they expect. They expect listening, hard work, and real results, I’m excited to take that experience to Queen’s Park,” said Fife in a release.

“I am so proud of the people that supported me, and I am grateful to the voters that have put their trust in me.”

Liberal Steven Del Duca took the byelection in Vaughan — called simultaneously with the one in K-W — holding the riding for the grits.

The NDP’s win in K-W means the McGuinty Liberals will remain a minority government.
