Hawks still perfect

The number two nationally ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team added two more wins to their undefeated season over the weekend with a 5-1 victory over the York Lions and a 1-0 defeat of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

On Saturday night, the Hawks were propelled over the Lions by a pair of goals from rookie Candice Styles and team captain Andrea Ironside, while third-year Kaley Powers notched the only marker on Sunday versus the Blues. Powers goal gave her sole possession of the team lead in goals with nine on the season.

Veteran goalie Liz Knox was once again terrific in the Hawks’ net, stopping 28 of 29 shots against the Lions and all 21 against the Blues for her Ontario University Athletics (OUA)-leading eighth shut-out of the season.

The Hawks now sit comfortably atop the OUA standings at 17-0, with the closest team to them -the Queen’s Gaels- nine points behind.
