Hawks end season with a win

The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks’ men’s football team handed the Queen’s Gaels their first loss of the season today, topping the number two nationally ranked Gaels 25-13.

Gaels’ quarterback Dan Brannagan became the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) all-time leader in passing yards early in the game, however, by the end of the day he was overtaken by Western’s Michael Faulds.

Despite Brannagan’s record setting day, the Hawks’ defence kept him in check, intercepting the fifth-year star three times including one that was returned 110 yards for a touchdown by Hawks safety Scott McCahill.

Laurier quarterback Evan Pawliuk had his most efficient game of the season, throwing for 273 yards and a touchdown, but most importantly not throwing a single interception.

The win vaults the Hawks into second place in the province, giving them a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
