Basketball playoff match-ups set

Both of Laurier’s basketball teams will be hosting an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) playoff game, and both will be playing the Guelph Gryphons. Both WLU teams finished third in the OUA west division, with the Golden Hawk women posting a record of 15-7 and the men finishing 13-9.

Laurier’s women’s team finished their season on Feb. 19 with a 68-55 win over the Brock Badgers, which was ultimately decisive in the final standings as the Badgers finished just one game behind the Hawks with a record of 14-8.

The WLU women went 2-0 versus Guelph this season, posting wins of 64-46 and 70-53. The Hawks posted their best record since 2004-05 this season and a win over the Gryphons can bring them back to the OUA quarterfinals after falling to Lakehead in the first round of last year’s playoffs.

On the men’s side, the Golden Hawks finished their regular season with a 78-73 loss to Brock, however already had third spot in the OUA west clinched prior to the game.

The Hawks split their season series with the Gryphons this year, winning in Waterloo on Jan. 19 but losing in Guelph on Feb. 9. Despite losing on the final day of the season, the sixth-place Gryphons squeaked into the playoffs thanks to possessing the tie-breaker over Brock and Waterloo who finished with identical 9-13 records.

Both games will be held at the Laurier Athletic Complex with the women’s game going at 6:00 and the men’s at 8:00.
