A season of promise fizzles for basketball Hawks

In a season that saw the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s basketball team ranked as high as No. 5 nationally, their season and dreams of a championship all evaporated in one night.

The Guelph Gryphons shocked the Hawks with a 61-58 victory at the Athletic Complex in front of dumbfounded Laurier fans and alumni and elated Guelph supporters.

A 17 point fourth-quarter by the Gryphons and some timely defence stymied the Hawks, who were missing Patrick Donnelly (concussion) and Maxwell Allin (flu).

Drew Morris scored 20 points, and made four out of five three-point attempts and Kareem Malcom notched 15 points to pace the Gryphons to the monumental upset.

Conor Meschino had a double-double with 16 points scored and 11 rebounds and Kale Harrison notched 15 points in the loss.

Kyle Enright finished with 10 points and nailed two out of three three-point attempts.
