An unfortunate end to an exciting season

The Wilfridย Laurierย University menโ€™sย varsityย soccerย season cameย to an unfortunate conclusionย thisย Sunday.ย

In a match that determined whetherย or notย theyย would continue into the postseason, the Hawks tied with Brock Badgers 0-0 despiteย creatingย scoring chances up until the final whistle.ย

The audience at University Stadium could hardly go a few minutes without a cheer or exclamationย โ€“ย and rightfully so. The box scoreย was littered with four yellow cards and one red from an aggressive slide tackle from Brock.ย ย ย

There were nine corner kicks and 15ย shots for Laurier,ย compared to one corner kick and nine shots for Brockย โ€“ย the days tie being a significant achievement for the goalkeepers.ย

The pivotal moment of the game was a penalty kick for Laurier that was denied by the Badger in net.ย ย

โ€œWe have to trust what weโ€™ve setup as far as the gameย plan goes,ย and what we do as a team,ย because thatโ€™s the only wayย we will have success.โ€

Head coach, Marioย Halapir,ย addressed this momentย in particular,ย saying, โ€œThis year has been a tough year for sure, and I mean today exemplifies our year, missing a penalty shot and then we had chance after chance andย โ€“ย unfortunatelyย โ€“ย in soccer, you have to put them in the back of the net.โ€ย

Although Laurierย managed to push back against theย losses that plagued them in theย beginning of their season, the lack of goals became the new challengeย that held them fromย pushing further to the postseason.ย ย

The teamโ€™s statistics say it all:ย of the 16 game season,ย the first eight games held six losses,ย a tie and a win,ย whereas the later halfย heldย two wins, a loss and four ties.ย

The four ties are the most difficult to negotiate;ย one goal away from victory butย the game stillย ends in a draw.ย ย ย

โ€œ0-0 score is when you need the win and itโ€™s going to be tough to get the result that you want.ย And we still had it, it was in our control,โ€ย Halapirย said.ย

The end of the season feels untimely, the Hawksย were just beginning to find the rhythm to their game.ย ย

โ€œWe can try and break down all the different things [but] the real telling factorย โ€“ย something weโ€™ve done better at the endย โ€“ย [is that]ย weโ€™ve probably stuck to our gameplay a little bit better as the seasonย progressed,โ€ย Halapirย explained.ย ย

In the later part of the season Laurier stayed competitive inย matchups against opponentsย that they had soundly lost earlier in the season.ย One clearย example of the Hawks improvement is how they responded to the defeats in the firstย eightย games,ย taking a 3-0 loss to Westernย andย later beating them 1-0 when they played in the following weeks. The same is trueย ofย a close gameย playedย with McMaster;ย they turned from a loss to a tie.ย

The gradual improvement shows the effects of the coaching staff. This bodes well for the teamย โ€“ย comprised mostly of senior studentsย โ€“ย making coaching crucial if Laurier is to be successful in the coming seasons.ย ย

โ€œWe tried to do it individually and it doesnโ€™t work,โ€ย Halapirย said.ย โ€œAnd todayย โ€“ย after the penalty shotย โ€“ย it was back to individual and I think we got back to some semblance again in the second half,ย but when we try to do our own thing individually it doesnโ€™t work.โ€ย ย

โ€œWe have to trust what weโ€™ve setup as far as the gameย plan goes,ย and what we do as a team,ย because thatโ€™s the only wayย we will have success.โ€ย
