Wilfrid Laurierโ€™s menโ€™s basketball team gave their star player a little bit more support Saturday, hosting a silent auction in support of the ALS Society of Canada on Saturday.

The fundraiser was held in honour of third-year guard Max Allinโ€™s father, who passed away from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) last month.

The teamโ€™s manager Meagan Davis coordinated the event, saying that she found overwhelming support from the community, players and the Allin family.

โ€œA few of the guys and I were talking about just supporting Max and his family and it kind of hit me,โ€ said Davis. โ€œIt was on the way back from one of our games and we all turned to each other and were like โ€˜we should do a fundraiser.โ€™โ€

Starting at 1 p.m., the fundraiser took place during the Golden Hawksโ€™ basketball games Saturday afternoon.

The event raised approximately $5,500. Items included tickets for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors and Kitchener Rangers, autographed memorabilia, gym memberships, food packages, appliances and much more.

โ€œI started getting the donations last Wednesday and they havenโ€™t stopped coming in,โ€ Davis said. โ€œI went around to local businesses and then the support from the community has just been incredible.

โ€œThe community has come together and it really is an overwhelming feeling.โ€
