Laurier Students for Learning (LSFL) est un club francophone idéal pour les étudiant.e.s passionné.e.s par l’enseignement, qui veulent s’impliquer à Laurier. LSFL est une association dirigée par des étudiants dans le cadre des clubs et des associations du WLU Students’ Union.
LSFL accueille des cercles de lecture en français et en anglais animés par des étudiant.e.s pour les enfants de la région de Waterloo. Depuis 2017, le club vise à promouvoir l’alphabétisation et l’apprentissage des langues.
Actuellement, LSFL a un besoin urgent de bénévoles car la demande des cercles de lecture, particulièrement en français, continue d’augmenter.
L’importance du LSFL
En Ontario, les parents trouvent peu d’occasions pour permettre à leurs enfants d’améliorer leur français en dehors de la salle de classe. Les clubs francophones comme LSFL aident à rendre l’apprentissage d’une nouvelle langue plus accessible pour ceux qui ne savent pas par où commencer.
La lecture en groupe permet un apprentissage ludique et dynamique grâce aux liens que les enfants forment avec leurs pairs. Pour chaque séance, les enfants âgés de 7 à 12 ans, sont placés sous la responsabilité d’un.e étudiant.e bénévole de WLU. Ils choisissent ensemble un livre qui convient aux compétences de chaque enfant.
Pour éviter la fatigue des enfants, les périodes de lecture alternent avec des jeux en groupes en lien avec l’alphabétisation. Ce format donne l’occasion aux enfants d’apprendre à leur propre rythme, avec le soutien des bénévoles.
Le recrutement
Dès le commencement des cercles littéraires, LSFL a compris l’importance d’offrir des services francophones à la communauté diverse de la région de Waterloo. Les programmes français étaient vraiment populaires et solidaires grâce à la gratuité du programme.
Cependant, le défi principal de ce club réside dans le recrutement de volontaires francophones. Dans une institution anglophone comme WLU, les étudiants francophones sont en nombre limité. Pour répondre à la demande, LSFL doit former des groupes de deux ou trois enfants avec un.e seule bénévole.
Une solution serait de solliciter les étudiants du département de Langues et Littératures de Laurier, en particulier ceux qui se destinent à des carrières d’enseignement et ont besoin d’accumuler de l’expérience avec les enfants.
Il faut plus de bénévoles
« Ce n’est pas idéal d’avoir plusieurs lecteurs avec un seul volontaire. Idéalement chaque enfant aura son propre volontaire pour chaque cercle littéraire. Quand il y a plusieurs enfants avec un volontaire ce sont les enfants qui souffrent. L’attention du volontaire est divisée et les erreurs littéraires arrivent plus fréquemment sans correction » dit Carmichael, la vice-présidente de LSFL.
Il est clair qu’il y a un déficit de volontaires, mais il faut faire beaucoup d’efforts pour recruter des étudiant.es francophones ! Chaque année, LSFL participe à des événements promotionnels. Il fait des publicités sur Instagram et demande à chaque volontaire d’amener un ami. Quelquefois ça fonctionne, mais ce n’est pas souvent qu’ils trouvent des volontaires fiables. Ils accueillent tous ceux qui ont une passion pour l’enseignement et qui veulent inspirer les jeunes à poursuivre l’étude de la langue française.
Laurier Students for Learning est un club remarquable qui promeut la langue et la culture française dans la communauté de Kitchener-Waterloo. Ce club encourage les jeunes de Waterloo et la communauté de Laurier à partager leur passion pour la francophonie. A WLU Francophone club to promote reading
Laurier Students for Learning (LSFL) is a perfect francophone club for students passionate about teaching and who want to get involved at Laurier. LSFL is a student-run association within WLU Students’ Union clubs and associations.
LSFL hosts reading circles in French and English led by students for children in the Waterloo Region. Since 2017, the club has aimed to promote literacy and language learning.
Currently, LSFL urgently needs volunteers since the demand for reading circles, particularly in French, continues to increase.
The Importance of LSFL
In Ontario, parents find few opportunities to allow their children to improve their French outside of the classroom. Francophone clubs, such as LSFL, help make learning a new language more accessible for those who do not know where to start.
Group reading allows for a fun and dynamic learning experience because of the bonds the children make with their peers. For each session, children between the ages of 7 and 12 are placed under the responsibility of a WLU student volunteer. They choose a book together that suits the skills of each child.
To avoid children’s fatigue, reading periods alternate with games played in groups relating to literacy. This format gives children the opportunity to learn at their own pace, with the support of volunteers.
Recruitment
Since the beginning of literary circles, LSFL understood the importance of providing francophone services to the diverse community of the Waterloo region. The French programs were very popular and supportive given that they were offered for free.
However, the club’s main challenge lies in recruiting francophone volunteers. In an English-speaking institution like WLU, there are a limited number of French-speaking students. To meet the demand, LSFL must make groups of two or three children with one single volunteer.
A solution would be to solicit students from Laurier’s Department of Languages and Literatures, especially those who are destined for teaching careers and need to gain experience with children.
More Volunteers are Needed
“It is not ideal to have many readers with one volunteer. Ideally, each child would have their own volunteer for each literature circle. It is the children who suffer when there are several students with one volunteer. The volunteer’s attention is divided and literary errors occur more frequently without being corrected”, says Carmichael, the vice president of LSFL.
It is evident that there is a shortage of volunteers, but a lot of effort is needed to recruit French-speaking students! Each year, LSFL participates in promotional events. They advertise on Instagram and ask each volunteer to bring a friend. Sometimes it works, but it is not often that they find reliable volunteers. They welcome everyone who has a passion for teaching and who wants to inspire youth to pursue a study in the French language.
Laurier Students for Learning is a remarkable club that promotes French language and culture in the Kitchener-Waterloo community. This club encourages young people from Waterloo and the Laurier community to share their passion for francophonie. The growing demand for French reading circles shows the interest of young people in learning and teaching in French.
