Curlers golden once again

Laura Crocker and her WLU rink can’t seem to stop winning.

Fresh off their world championship win as Team Canada at the International Curling Championships in Japan, the Laurier women’s curling team claimed the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) title Monday night in Guelph with an 8-4 win over the Western Mustangs in championship game.

Not only does this mark the second straight provincial title for the Hawks, it is their third in the past five years.

Crocker and the rest of the squad — comprised of lead Pam Feldkamp, second Jenny Gates, vice Sarah Wilkes and fifth Cheryl Kreviazuk — will now get a crack at the national championship when Brock University hosts the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) finals in three weeks.

And, surprise, surprise, the Laurier women have dominated that competition of late as well. The Hawks took last year’s CIS title, as well as coming away with national championship wins in 2008 and 2009.

The CIS finals will be taking place March 14-18 at the Welland Curling Club in Welland, Ont.
