Experience of History
Every summer the Laurier Center for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies (LCMSDS) hosts educational tours to North Western Europe offering students the chance to visit Canadian battlefields.
The Cleghorn Battlefield Tour is open to all Laurier students and focuses on understanding in greater depth, Canada’s participation in both the First and Second World War’s.
A partnership with Université de Montréal, French and English speaking students come together to explore their different memories of Canada’s role during both wars. In addition students are asked to consider as how and why different memories developed in the two Canadian cultures during the post-war world eras.
Through visitation of battlefields students discover how things like terrain play a large part in the outcome of battles; as well they come to better understand why certain areas had more strategic significance over others. Additionally each student is required to present on a topic of their choice, as well as a soldier commemorated or buried along the tour’s rout.
For the past two years the Cord’s Visual Director Nick Lachance has participated in the Cleghorn Tour, both as a student and this past summer as a photojournalist.
