Waterloo Regional Police continue to look for Ager Mohsin Hasan, 24, a suspect facing a second-degree murder charge for the death of 22-year-old Melinda Vasilije.

Vasilije was said to be have been found in her apartment in Kitchener on April 28 with various stab wounds.

Shortly after the incident, a representative from Waterloo Regional Police Services (WRPS) said Hasan fled to the United Sates. An individual matching his description was reportedly last seen in Erie County, Pennsylvania the morning after the murder.

He was allegedly spotted switching licence plates in a Walmart parking lot and he has been on the run ever since.

A user on Reddit claiming to be Hasan posted a statement on May 1. In the post, the user apparently explained that he had been in a serious relationship with Vasilije for over a year until they broke up this past April.

WRPS said in a statement on May 2 that they have been made aware of the Reddit post and that investigators are reviewing the information that was posted.

“Information like this is potential evidence and, as such, needs to be authenticated and verified,” Insp. Mike Haffner said, according to the Waterloo Regional Record.

In the Reddit post, which was removed from the site the following day, the user provided an account of the events that took place the night which Vasilije was murdered.

The author of the post allegedly confessed to stabbing the woman in self-defence.

“Out of shock and fear I grab one [knife]. I hit her with it, almost blindly. A few times. I was confused, shocked and scared. I had no intentions of that happening,” the user wrote, according to the Waterloo Region Record. “When I left I honestly thought she just passed out. Then I looked at the blood, and started freaking out and just ran.”

“I honestly had no intentions of ever doing that to her, I was protecting myself,” the user wrote.

The writer said that he admitted to have been with another individual since the couple’s breakup, which allegedly upset Vasilije, causing her to hit and slap the man.

“I go up to her to try and give her a hug, almost out of no where she grabs a knife by the sink. She comes at me in full force, aiming towards my face. I tell her to stop. She doesn’t, I tried grabbing the knife but ended up cutting my hands. After a few cuts I lost it,” the post apparently read.

The user wrote that he did not mean for the incident to happen and stated he hopes for forgiveness from Vasilije.

The post also included various pictures of the couple and text conversations which occurred before Hasan apparently arrived at Vasilije’s apartment.

In an interview, Hasan’s mother allegedly stated she believes the Reddit post was indeed written by her son due to the photos included, which she concluded no other individual could have access to.

Hasan had been previously ordered by police not to have contact with Vasilije or enter Waterloo.

The post stated that the user fled to the United States in order to give himself some space and time to process before turning himself in. Police are encouraging Hasan to do so and turn himself in so that he can be extradited to Canada and face charges.

Insp. Mike Haffner said in a media statement that investigators are continuing to work in tandem with U.S. law enforcement agencies in order to find Hasan.
